Boardwalk Empire ? Another Cinematic Masterpiece from HBO
No one else does Period Dramas like HBO does it. Period! HBO over a period of several decades has produced countless television movies and series in all possible genres but it?s the period dramas that have always outshined the rest. The authenticity that HBO brings to its Period dramas remains unsurpassed till date. High production value, great actors & directors, outstanding vision etc. all of this comes later. The key driving force that really enables HBO to go on producing such great shows one after the other, year after year, is its commitment to cinematic excellence and its loyal viewers, whom it never disappoints.
HBO?s award winning period drama, Boardwalk Empire is yet another feather in the cap for HBO. The show is based on a book titled Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City and is set in Atlantic City, New Jersey, during the Prohibition era.
The depiction of that time period is so authentic that not only did it get overwhelming positive popular response but a critical one as well. It is estimated that a whopping 18 million dollars were spent on the very first episode. This goes to show how committed HBO is to making the experience as original as possible, whatever the cost might be. And, of course it cannot be denied that having the Oscar winner Martin Scorsese, directing and the gifted Steve Buscemi in the lead role certainly made the series a lot more popular.
However the success of this show should not come as such a big surprise as it was more or less expected because it was created by none other than Emmy Award-winning screenwriter and producer Terence Winter of The Sopranos (another award winning HBO television series). Having such great names attached to this series made it quite an anticipated event in itself and it certainly did not disappoint.
As expected, the awards and accolades that were heaped upon the show clearly made it the most popular show of the year. It gathered an astounding 26 wins and 38 nominations in Emmy?s, Golden Globes, AFI, Screen Actors Guild Awards etc., including best director, best actor and best series.
Since its first episode aired in September 2009 the season has completed 2 seasons and has been renewed for a third, which should be good news for all the fans of this series out there.
In a time of big budget, special effects Hollywood productions; HBO?s continued support for such works of art goes a long way in revealing its true value system as a network whose priority has always been to produce such content that makes the art of motion picture reach its zenith.
Class Actress, Penguin Prison
Event on 2012-05-17 21:00:00
Class Actress
Elizabeth Harper, a former drama major from Los Angeles, had been writing delicate, wistful songs of longing and detachment for several years when she met musician & psychoanalyst-in-training Mark Richardson in 2009 and asked him to remix one of her tracks. Their creative chemistry was instantaneous – Mark's production style was cerebral but sensual, relying heavily on vintage synths and drum machines, and influenced by '80s bands like Human League and Depeche Mode while still conscious of modern club sounds steeped in hip hop and house. It perfectly complemented the melancholy undertone in Harper's songs and revealed in them an urge towards ecstatic abandon. Along with multi-instrumentalist/engineer Scott Rosenthal, the two formed Class Actress and recorded the debut EP Journal of Ardency, which was released to much acclaim by Chris Taylor's (of Grizzly Bear) Terrible Records in 2010. In the year since, Class Actress toured the US, Europe and South America, Mark worked towards attaining his PHD, and the band completed a new full-length record, entitled Rapprocher, which is French for "to come close to." The record is the soundtrack for a tragic love affair conducted in European discos and New York nightclubs, via smart phone disconnection and jet-lag disorientation, from within the dull opacity of luxurious hotel rooms and anti-anxiety medication. It's the story of a relationship that's yearning to go another round. Harper's secrets and Richardson's beats liberate the listener and freedom reigns on the dance floor. This is sensual music about tragic romance and the eternal longing for what you can't have. Where Journal was the secret diary, Rapprocher is the love letter. The pleasure and sorrow of romantic connection are inescapably entwined in Harper's lyrics, while the smooth, cool surfaces of Richardson's production conjure an eternal after-hours nightlife that Harper inhabits fearlessly, displaying a provocative, wounded raw sexuality that some reviewers have compared to early Madonna. Class Actress is: Guilty Pleasure. NSA dance music. Casual Encounters. Stalker Pop. Depeche Mode meets early Madonna and Five Star as heard on the radio in the leather backseat of a cab.
Penguin Prison
Even if you never find out what a Penguin Prison is, there's no denying Chris Glover aka Penguin Prison has made a brilliant record. If you're a fan of New York disco, as accessible as it is angular, all burbling bass lines, resonant rhythms, shimmering synths and heavenly melodies, then you'll love the new Penguin Prison album. Imagine, if you will, Chic produced by James Murphy, or a collaboration between Prince and The Human League. It is some measure of Penguin Prison's skills in the studio, on vocals and in terms of songwriting, that such illusory marvels have been achieved on this superb self-titled collection, that some critics have gone as far as to hail it a modern day Off The Wall masterpiece. "It's not a concept album about Michael," says Prison, or maybe we should call him Penguin, of his all-time hero "But it's definitely been influenced by him." To say he was an early starter would be an understatement. From the age of 10 he was singing in the local gospel choir. When he was 11, he got an agent and began recording jingles. By 12, he had learned to play guitar and was into punk rock, the American variety – bands such as Green Day, NOFX and Bad Religion. He even performed as a teen at the legendary CBGBs with his band The Museum. Chris became Penguin Prison at the start of 2009. It wasn't long before he earned a reputation as remixer du jour for the likes of Marina and the Diamonds, Goldfrapp and Passion Pit. He agrees that he conferred NY kudos especially on the British artists, and admits his favorite remix was for Jamiroquai, adding that the secret to a good remix is "to throw everything away from the original track and start from scratch". It was inevitable that Chris would then make music of his own, which he began in late 2009. You can hear the spectacular results on the debut Penguin Prison album, which sounds to all intents and purposes like a Greatest Hits collection, so chock-full it is of catchy hooks and classic pop choruses. There is Multi-Millionaire, which is about "being rich even if you've got no money" and one titled Don't Fuck With My Money that features Jackson-style percussive gasps and a lyric that pushes the envelope. "I was worried it was too crazy – 'Can I really say that?' People said leave it in, so I did. "All my lyrics are sarcastic but serious as well," he adds. "So I'm really saying 'don't fuck with my money'! Because if you try to, it's not going to be good…"

Othello as a Leader in Shakespeare’s Dramas: Essay
Othello has a very close relationship with his collegues. Othello, Iago, and Cassio develop what is known as work relationship. Carl Koch gives the following portrayal of work intimacy in his text book Living a Christian Lifestyle:
When people share tasks that bond them together in affirming ways they experience work intimacy. Sharing responsibilities, decisions, and the satisfaction of a job well done brings people together because they can appreciate one another and feel mutual support (Koch 157).
A task such as saving a nation from the arch enemy succeeds

Analyzing The Drama Queen And A Woman’s I.Q. Test
Article by Luigi Di Serio
Why do women love drama? The answer is quite easy. Women CREATE drama simply to put men to the test. Women are attention-seekers in constant need of reassurance and affirmation that someone cares for them and wants to protect them. There is a correlation between the amount of drama a woman creates and the success of a relationship, based on these factors. The less women believe they are being cared for and protected, the more drama they create. In the realm of courtship and intimate relationships, women CONSTANTLY put men to the test with the use of comments, complaints, and DRAMA. Drama is employed by women to put people, often men, on the spot, by exploiting their emotional strengths and weaknesses to the breaking point. Women quickly judge how well men handle drama; this is when they determine how much patience, courage, will, passion, and other important characteristics are present or absent in a man. Why are men so oblivious to this? There are two main reasons. First, it is all played out subconsciously, and second, we have been socially programmed through media, pop culture, and belief systems to become totally unaware of this fact. For women, drama separates the boys from the men. Some of us rise to the occasion, while others are clearly not up to the challenge and wither away like an undesirable species. In relationships, the more a man passes a woman’s test, the more control and intimacy they achieve with their partner. Women want men who are in control of themselves, yet slightly out of control; a confident, independent individual who excels in different arenas of life. This is because women ultimately “surrender” themselves, to a certain extent, to a man who they believe to be “the one”. Here are some examples of how women employ drama, along with I.Q. test questions and comments: “So, where are you taking me?” {wants sense of mystery/romance created for her}”Can you do this for me…pleaseeeeee?” {test of a man’s integrity}”This place sucks!”"I want this (clothing/food).” {anything impulsive}”I am annoyed.” {any extreme emotion}”Those people are bothering me.”"I have a lot of guy friends.” {testing waters of jealousy, insecurity}”All girls are bitches…I don’t have many female friends.” {same as above, but w/hint of autonomy}”Why are you looking at her?!” {test of loyalty through use of overt jealousy}”This guy asked me out. He told me I’m hot/cute.” {testing waters of jealousy, insecurity}”Me and my girls are having a girls night out.” {employing sense of mystery}”I am going here instead.” {sense of mystery w/ display of independence}”Leave me alone!” {“I want to talk about something with you.” Or, “Leave me alone.”}”I don’t play games.” {“I play games CONSTANTLY.”}”I’m not worried about guys…just focused on school/work.” {diversions that are props or “fronts”}All these techniques are a women’s way of testing men to see if the man is jealous, insecure, overly-nice, manipulative, self-serving, spineless, or basically, worth their trouble. To a woman, the most UNATTRACTIVE thing in the world is INSECURITY in men. Why do you think nice guy’s finish last? Because being nice, usually means, but not always, being insecure in one way or another. Women constantly test men’s security. Since they already know they can seduce us with their bodies, they need not try this as a test, unless you passed all the others. Women are only attracted to men whom they seek intimacy with, men who are stern and in control of themselves, yet not jealous or controlling. It makes us irresistible. EXAMPLE 1:Woman: “So, where are you taking me?”Failed Answer: “Where do you want to go?”Passed Answer: “It’s a surprise.”Super-Seduction Pass: “Don’t worry, you’re going to LOVE it, and if you don’t….too bad…” EXAMPLE 2:Woman: “I want this (clothing/food).”Failed Answer: “Anything you want.” Or, “You’re so demanding!”Passed Answer: “Not now, but maybe later.” Or, “So take some initiative and go get it.”Super-Seduction Pass: “Hey, nothing’s for free in this world…what’s in it for ME?”Do you see the difference? The failed answers are either submissive or insecure responses. The normal passed answers are alright, but not necessarily good for creating attraction, ambiguity or indifference, all of which keep women interested (at least to the point where they will create more tests and drama). The super-seduction pass answers let the woman know you are in control, and if she wants something, she can give in to you. It creates mystery and tension, which, when used together, are VERY powerful and seductive tools. The bottom line is, when it comes to dealing with a woman’s drama, recognize it, and act accordingly- that is, be a MAN, not MANHANDLED. And never take a woman’s words TOO seriously; they change their minds more often than baby’s change diapers (never mind that analogy, what the hell do guys know about BABIES???). Entre el Si Y el No de la mujer, No me atrevaria yo a poner una punta de afiler. (Between a woman’s “Yes”nd “No”, There is not room for a pin to go.) – Cervantes, Don Quixote-written by Luigi Di Serio, edited by Aaron S. Bayley

Props of Period Dramas
There is a huge mass appeal to period dramas. But what is it that makes them so interesting for people who really know nothing of that world other than vague stories and, of course, the period dramas themselves?
Is it the throwback to a forgotten time when things were simpler, when everyone knew their place and communities were close knit affairs, not internet chat sites that saw people be best friends with people they had never even met? Is it the yearning for something different, the ultimate escapism into a time that held infinite potential and was filled with ?gentlemen? and ?real ladies? rather than lads and ladettes, yobs and thugs?
Or is it something more simple? A surprising number of people relate to the feel of the period more than the characters, meaning that much of the allure could be down to look of period dramas rather than what they are actually saying. Many modern period dramas offer allegories for the current state of the world and therefore emotionally they may simply carry a similar impact. So could it be that the props and costumes are the things that really get people hooked on these shows and films?
Props are certainly very important; the nostalgia of a forgotten world often comes much more through the fashions and styles than it does through the actions of its characters. So it could be said that the right movie props might be even more important that the right script. When the movie props are just right, it is much easier to gloss over inconsistencies in script or direction, as the audiences? brains are thoroughly engaged in the look and feel of the piece.
So next time you are watching a period drama, just notice how much of your enjoyment is created through the style rather than the script. You may be surprised
