Hollywood: A Third Memoir

Larry McMurtry is a bestselling novelist and memoirist, but to many people he is best known for the film adaptations of his fiction from the 1963 Hud (based on his Horseman, Pass By) to his own Oscar- and Golden Globe-winning screenplay of 2005′s Brokeback Mountain (based on an E. Annie Proulx short story.) Between those classics are other movie adaptations including The Last Picture Show (1971), the Academy Award-winning Terms of Endearment (1984), and Lonesome Dove (1989), transformed into a television mini-series. Cougars In Dating May Be

“Cougars” in Dating May be on Endangered Species List

A new study finds the phenomenon of “Cougars” is not a growing trend after all. In fact, it may be nothing more than a myth.

The older woman younger man relationships get plenty of attention thanks to celebrities such as Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, and movie classics like “The Graduate.” Despite all of this, “Cougars” are not running wild!

Some very interesting research projects are done at The University of Wales Institute’s Cardiff School of Health Sciences. In this newly announced one about online dating, it reveals how both men and women continue to be traditional in their searches for a soulmate or perfect relationship partner.

For example, the study showed most men desire attractive, young females. Often, they look for a much younger woman to be their partner because aging men are looking for ways to feel better about the inevitable process. Young men, aged 20 to 25, are targeting women their own age or slightly younger. No big news headlines here.

Women on the other hand were different but they didn’t cause a big surprise either. Most of the over 40 women “Cougars” in the study weren’t interested in being on the prowl for “Cubs.” They were seeking an older (and hopefully a wealthier man). These findings argue against the “cougar” craze that has become popular on TV shows and movies, such as “Sex and the City,” and Courteney Cox’s ABC Television series “Cougar Town.”

The study published in the Journal of Evolution and Human Behavior involved 22,000 men and women who are users of online dating websites. They came from 14 different countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, Mexico, Russia, and South Africa.

In leading the study, Psychologist Dr Michael Dunn analyzed the data on the age preferences of women and men using online dating sites. “A critically important consideration for advertisers on online dating sites appears to be the age of a potential partner,” Dunn said. “The transference of female desire from older men to relatively younger men has been argued based on growth of the toy boy phenomenon,” he said. “Our results show clearly that most women across all age groups and cultures, are targeting males either their own age or older.

Plot Summary: Songwriter Stephin Merritt always seems to have a Chihuahua on his lap. Performing with the Magnetic Fields since 1991, he has composed some of his generation’s most intellectually incisive, whimsical, witty and acerbic music (Merritt has been compared to Cole Porter for his sophisticated use of language). A dedicated, growing army of admirers flocks to the group’s concerts and makes Merritt an odd sort of anti-celebrity, one who is happiest not being recognized, whiling away the hours in gay bars on either coast (his favorite place for writing music) or spending a good part of the day soaking up obscure movie classics. Ten years in the making, the film follows the famously grumpy Merritt and explores his relationship with Claudia Gonson, his creative collaborator and the band’s manager. It paints a portrait of an artist whose music brilliantly holds up a mirror to the fears, joys, and insecurities of his time.

Through his recording and songwriting process, the film traces a 20-year career that has yielded one of the most engaging bodies of work in the contemporary American songbook.
